@CaptD I’ve actually preordered a few games this year tbh (which is unlike me). Same though… ‘in from we trust” and all that 😎. Not sure if I’ll be playing it straight away… you know how my schedule is and all… but if the urge to play it takes over I’ll be sure to tag you with my thoughts 👍

Hmmm, is Assassins Creed Valhalla free? I'm downloading it and from what I can tell it's the full game.

I’ve just pre-ordered Immortals of Aveum. Figured I’d take a chance with it.

Hey everyone

I've really got no one to share this with, apart from my wife (who is really happy), I've finally managed to upgrade to the PS5!

There was a great special here where I live at an online retailer. I managed to purchase a standard PS5 (Disc Drive version), along with an official charging dock for the DualSense controller. I also bought Hogwarts Legacy (massive Pothead, currently re-reading Order of the Phoenix at the moment) and Hot Wheels Unleashed.

I'm hoping to sell my PS4 Pro for a good price, so that I can recover, at most, nearly 50% of the money I spent on the PS5, accessories and the 2 games.

I'll only be able to try the PS5 out after the 2nd of September, as I have a hectic schedule at University for the next 2 weeks, but I'm really looking forward to experiencing what the current generation is like.

Thanks mate, I'm really looking forward to it. I can't wait to see the world of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade realised on the PS5. I think it's the game that finally convinced to make the step up to the PS5.

@N1ghtW1ng Congrats on the purchase! I’m really loving my PS5. I’ve had it a couple years now; was lucky enough to get one about 6 months after launch and am at the point where I am getting annoyed when I go back and use my PS4 because it runs so slow.

I also really liked Hogwarts Legacy. It’s probably still my GOTY for 2023. Like you, I’m a fan of the franchise and it’s just such a labor of love by the developers to have such an accurate representation of adventuring and exploring in that world. I put in around 80 hours into the game and could have kept going but I had too many other games to play. I can almost guarantee you’ll love it.

Have you joined PS+? It’s a great way to get a large library of PS5 games instantly with PS+ Extra.
Of course, having too much to play is going to be detrimental to your studies! 😅

Thank you for the message bro, really appreciate it.

I have an SSD on the laptop that I use for University, and I've been playing Fallout: New Vegas on it, and there's literally no time spent on loading screens, so I can't imagine what it'll be like on the PS5 compared to the PS4.

My wife is going to have to put with me showing her all the easter eggs, references and other cool features of Hogwarts Legacy once I start it up. I've already decided on my choice of house (Slytherin) and I'm aiming to recreate myself as accurately as possible in-game.

May I ask you a question about Hogwarts Legacy? Is the combat as simplistic as most reviewers have pointed out? Is combat a major portion of the game itself?

I actually had PS+ from 2011 until 2018. I unsubscribed in 2018 as I felt I was neglecting my own library of games in favour of the PS+ library, and it started feeling a bit overwhelming having all those PS+ titles to play through as well.

I'm planning on resubscribing once I'm done with University and I'm settled with a job etc. I dearly miss playing Gran Turismo Sport online.

@N1ghtW1ng Oh yeah, absolutely. 😄 Part of the fun is sharing gaming experiences.

Somehow I’ve never played a Fallout game. It’s one of many holes in my gaming repertoire. I think I have FO4 in my library from the PS+ collection, but I hear it’s not as good as the older games so I’ve held off.

As far as showcasing the PS5, some games are better than others at taking full advantage of the SSD. But yes, in general it’s quite snappy to just open a game and be playing so quickly and jump from parts within a game with minimal loading screens. There are still some games that have loading and hitches, but the process of booting the game, saving a game, fast travel, and entering a new area on a map are all usually really smooth and quick compared to PS4.

Hogwarts Legacy is a nice showcase for the PS5. The world is huge and transitions are pretty seamless. Toward the end of the game I had a few times when there was rare frame hitches but hardly noticeable in the context of gameplay.

As far as the questions about combat, it’s actually a pretty large part of the game. There’s a nice balance of exploration, simple puzzles, story beats, and combat. In various dungeon type areas there can be a lot of enemies and combat encounters. The combat itself is actually quite good, much better than I was expecting. It feels visceral and satisfying, it has enough variety to stay fresh for most of the duration of the long campaign, and is a nice balance of difficulty. Some of the bosses do have a spike in difficulty and I remember one or two boss or hoard encounters that got me a little frustrated, but never enough to die and have to retry more than a couple times. There’s also a difficulty slider if you want just a laid back experience. I played on normal difficulty and it was just about right.

If you’ve played games with Arkham style combat (I forget what they term that now) where you get a little warning above your head and have a quick chance to block or counter the attack, it’s kind of like that. However, all combat is ranged, there is no melee. That took some getting used to from what games I usually play. I kept wanting to melee an enemy then they closed in on me, and there’s not a punch or kick button in the truest sense. But there elemental attacks, special magic, ways to throw or push with magic, etc. as well as sneak and stealth attacks. Lots of variety. However, you can pretty much settle into the same 4-5 spells to use over and over and probably do fine, but it’s more fun to experiment with all the different spells.

As far as Gran Turismo — I actually just saw the movie (I dropped some expanded impressions over on the movie thread) and you may want to check it out if you’re a big fan, especially if you engage in the online racing part of it. I really enjoyed GT7, and it’s also a great use of the PS5, and I liked the adaptive triggers and haptics on the DualSense, some of the best use of the controller.

You should definitely check out the Fallout series if you enjoy Bethesda's style of RPGs. I didn't enjoy Fallout 4 on the PS4, but I'm quite pleased with Fallout: New Vegas on the PC (it ran horribly on the PS3 when I played it more than a decade ago). Fallout 3 is great as well.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how some of the PS4 games that I'm currently playing (Hades and Uncharted Lost Legacy) benefit from the PS5's SSD.

I really enjoy most games with an Arkham-like combat style, so I think I'd really like the combat in Hogwarts Legacy. Thank you for the details about the combat, some of the reviews I watched on YouTube didn't really dive deep into the nuances of the combat, and it appeared to be a little simplistic as a result.

I'll definitely head over to the Movie Thread to peruse your opinion on the Gran Turismo movie. I was tempted to purchase Gran Turismo 7 when I got my PS5, but Hot Wheels Unleashed was half the price of GT7, so it was a no-brainer for me. I'll just keep playing Gran Turismo Sport and see how it plays on the PS5 instead, while I wait for GT7 to decrease in price.

@Th3solution Unless you will be playing the previous Fallout games, I don't see it matters that other people consider Fallout 4 one of the weaker games of the series.

Bear in mind that the first two games are ancient at this point and a different type of game to 3, New Vegas and 4. The fourth game is probably the only game you have access to as well, with 3 and New Vegas being stuck on PS3/360.

Unless you really want to play Fallout 76?

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

@N1ghtW1ng @JohnnyShoulder @Max_Headroom Thanks for the Fallout feedback. Given the fact Bethesda has been locked down on Xbox, a remaster of Fallout 3 is not likely to ever happen on PS4 or PS5 so I should just try Fallout 4.
I’m undecided on Bethesda RPGs though — I really loved Skyrim and consider it one of my all-time favorites, but I think the game hit for me at just the perfect time for such a game and I’m not sure I would have clicked with it had I tried in a few years later. I tried The Outer Worlds and couldn’t quite get into it.

I got Sniper Elite 4 yesterday as it's under £5 in the current PSN sale. I have been wanting to try the series for a while, at that price I couldn't say no.

@colonelkilgore Good to hear. I don't know if it's for me, really, but I'll tool about this bank holiday weekend to see how I get along. I like the idea of it being set in Italy during the war, at least.
