Poll: Are You Sold on PlayStation Portal?

I need more info that'll likely only be available after its release. I'm more than happy to wait a while at that price though.

Part of me thinks having a dedicated PS5 streaming device would be cool. Playing games in bed, maybe in the garden. But I'm not sure I can justify spending £200 just to do that.

Looks like this thing is tailored to my wants and needs the smartphone/controller attachment combo wasn't able to fulfill, so yeah. Day one for me. If it turns out to be bad or doesn't satisfy me, it's going back within the 30 day return window.

I think if they could get 10-15% of the player base they would be satisfied.

I think it's a cool device, but if I'm buying a portable device I want it to be a legit portable device, rather than a mirroring device. Like for a little bit more you might as well get a Steam Deck.

It's a neat idea, and certainly a good option for people who don't want to hog the TV, I'm just a bit wary how many people it will actually cater for; it feels like a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist for that many to really warrant.

I'm definitely getting one but not day one, can see it going to around £170/£180 in the boxing day sales or even black friday, that's when il get one.

I would have been more interested if it had the option to stream from the cloud with PS+ Premium, that way at least it would have been like having another PS5.

Even if I wanted (which I don't) I couldn't because my internet just isn't good enough to stream games.
To give you an idea, just recently I've seen some people online arguing that a download speed of 54MB/s is "relatively slow". I have a download speed of 3MB/s

I get that this isn’t for everyone, but it would be for me.
Something like grinding, doing side quests or trophy hunting I can now just use this with. We have a multi-people household.
Would be great for match days🤩.

It would be like the Switch/Vita for me (we have great wi-if)- which never left the house really.

Only downside for me is the PS+ stuff. Hope that is an eventual feature.

I think its going to flop. Especially as it can only be used on home networks. Especially the high price . I've never used remote play and don't really have any reason to use it. It may be useful for couples with only 1 TV etc . I'd much prefer a new console. Also if I was going to use remote play it would be with a mobile and backbone device that allows you to play everywhere

@XboxTheBestBox it'll blow your mind but PS3 BC is achievable but not financially viable for Sony. They make more money by re-releasing ports of PS3 games, remaking them or charging you to stream them than by allowing you to play them via BC. It probably won't change either.

It's cool but you're seriously restricted by the Remote Play. It's not a dedicated handheld device like the Switch or Steam Deck, and a $200 price tag to boot? Yeah it's not really worthwhile in my eyes.

It tbh sounds great and as someone who has to give up ye TV for my son or wife it's fantastic BUT I really wish it was OLED LCD just sounds basic

I will now be able to play Switch, Xbox and PlayStation on handheld. Great news. Day one purchase.

The idea of having a direct link to the PS5 giving an almost latency free portable in my home sounds amazing. It gives me options to play away from the TV without having to compromise on the hardware I play on.

How it performs in the real world is key though so I will wait for some real test conditions nearer the time.

Not for me, but it looks like there’s some people who will get good use out of it. Good, it’ll be a good accessory for them to add to their PS ecosystem.

@EVIL-C but switch doesn't have any Sony first party games. If someone was interested in Nintendo games and handhelds, surely they would have bought a switch by now? But Steam Deck does make sense (for a ps player) and, personally, I'm somewhat tempted.

@XboxTheBestBox they could do it — if, in whatever console/iteration they have lined up next, include the guts of whatever was inside the original PS3, and have full hardware compatibility all the way back to PS1 - that would be an absolute joy. They probably won't though, it feels like an area they simply aren't interested in. Plus it's not like they're purposefully holding it back; I can't imagine they're making major bank on the handful of people like myself who are stumping up a fiver and change for Ape Escape.

I’d worry more about drifting. As a player on their 4th controller, unless there’s a solution to this, it’s a no for me. At least Switch joycons can be cheaply (compared to Sony) bought and replaced as they detach, what happens if you get drift with this?

Nope. If anything, my last shred of enthusiasm melted the moment I learned it can't be played at all unless the PS5 itself is turned on (I thought it could still be played with the system down via remote play, sort of like the Wii U..but I guess not) .. that's a damn shame. Oh well.

@mariomaster96 if you stay within reach of the PS5, you don't use WiFi, it uses Playstation link. You only use the WiFi if you're away from home.

Honestly I’d have to get my hands on one and demo it. I have an OG Switch and don’t play it handheld at all bc even with my glasses I can’t see a damned thing on it.

The only time I'd really use handheld is if I'm out of the house, but WiFi really isn't too good.

And how good is the PS Link connection? What is the distance allowed?

If you don't want it, don't buy, if you do, then buy it. I don't get why people go out of their way to hate a product they have no interest in. I don't want to buy a Ford Mustang, but I wouldn't go on a Mustang forum and tell people not to buy it. Personally, this is perfect for me.

I'd have much preferred the PS Vita 2/PSP 2 instead. It's never going to happen, but it's good to dream.

The processor is likely to be very modest because all it needs to do is convert the signal from the PS5 to a picture.

Secondly the unit has no meaningful storage on it so where would you store emulators and roms?

I just can't justify spending £200 on this considering remote play exists on devices I already own, and considering the fact I can currently purchase a Switch Lite (which much better functionality) for less than £190.

The price is a joke, but consider what Sony charges for hardware at the moment, it's hardly surprising.

Definitely need to wait for reviews on this one. I've tested out remote play once or twice and didn't enjoy the experience. Maybe it's my wifi.

Do we know the specs of this thing? I assumed it would still have some storage options for whatever, an SD card slot at least. I was also hoping for the processing power to be at least somewhat decent. I used to have a Steam Deck and loved playing upscaled PS2 games on it. Kinda regret getting rid of it and thought this could be a cheaper alternative.

The lack of Bluetooth is a clear example. If you buy this overpriced screen, you then have to pay even more money on their own devices to have wireless sound. It's disgraceful imo.

I get that there's money to be made of course, but like you said, just throw us a bone. We pay stupid amounts of money every year, every generation, every console. Just give us some freebies from personally my most memorable and favourite console. I literally boot up my PS3 just to play those MINIS like Mini Ninjas or RDR, GTA IV, LBP, LA Noire, Pixeljunk Eden, Max Payne 3 and many more. So many childhood memories

I’ve used remote play every now and then, even got a cradle to attach my phone to the controller, but user cases are extremely slim as I can only use the remote play app on wifi for some reason (U.K). This is the same by design so little use to me. Plus streaming sucks with the official app.

@gollumb82 no official specs have been released but videos previewing it say it has no storage.

I assume it will have flash memory for the OS but it won't be much.

There is no reason for Sony to put a decent CPU in there. It doesn't need it.

The Steam deck is a totally different beast and great at emulation. I was quite surprised at how well it plays gamecube games.

One thing is sure: Sony is lacking proper and clear communication for this device, there's still a lot of confusion, in every thread. You can actually play remotely from a different network via internet, or locally without internet connection if in the same network. Playstation Link is for AUDIO only, it doesn't allow the Portal to link directly to the PS5.

I should probably just vary what I do with my time some more if the normal TV won't suffice to be honest.

I actually like remote play on a portable. My wife and I used to live in a smaller places during grad school and after, so being able to grind an RPG while she took the TV was nice.

However, this thing doesn't do PS Plus Premium streaming, but only works with a PS5? And no bluetooth audio? Hard pass. With Plus streaming it would be great when I'm stuck at my MIL's house a couple of weeks each year or other travel, and it doesn't even need stronger hardware for that to work.

Yeah, it is great at emulation. I loved playing Burnout Revenge upscaled to 720p in my bed before bedtime. If what you say is true then I'll just save up some money and get a Steam Deck for Christmas.

I have zero faith in an overpriced device like this after trying remote play on my phone and it being absolute garbage.

That probably depends on the reliability of my own internet connection; I tried remote play on my Mac and I was experiencing frame drops and some crackling audio (but that could just be at the fault of my own computer's hardware, I'm not sure).

@sop I think Playstation are going to struggle a lot to market this in a way where people understand it without focusing too much on the stuff it doesn't have.

I've seen many comments elsewhere with people excited, only for someone else to explain what the device actually is, and then the original commenter to become disappointed. I can see this happening a lot when it releases. Many people will assume it's like the switch, buy it, and then be really annoyed when they open it and found out what they've actually bought.

That is, unless Sony focuses on the lack of Bluetooth, lack of offline ability, requirement for a PS5 and for it to be on etc, which is just off-putting to most consumers.

I don't know what they're thinking. They have $200 earbuds coming out but also a premium headset that's only $150 and this Portal thing exists for some reason and yet I find more value and use in the ear buds than the Portal.

We're getting a lot of different ways of playing from lots of different manufacturers so as I'm spending money on getting the spider-man PS5 as I couldn't get the panels I can't really justify it.

But price seems to be as low as Sony could push it.

Interesting but not for me. I like to play native. If you could connect it directly i might bite. Tried steam link once but just didn't gel with it. I would definitely be up for a device that was a decent size screen with a quality controller that I could plug into my pc as a handheld screen with minimal latency. Utilize the power of my PC but still play laying back on my office couch.

Here in the UK your average ISP spends £30 on your router.

So basically made from chewing gum.

So in my house even though I upgraded to a WiFi 6 gaming router pipes and a hot water tank blocked the signal.

So another upgrade to a mesh network and I get full cover in all the house AND garden with full signal and low latency.

I even managed to play cyberpunk on my tablet with no issues.

Not sold, but equally not unsold either. I will look into it more closer the time, but for now I guess I'm fine.

As long as i don't have to stop & watch eastenders or coronation street when the wife wants to then this device seems good to me.

@Wheatly It may connect directly to the PS5 via wi-fi (Ps VIta could do it with the PS4!) but for what I read on multiple Sony sources, PS Link is basically a replacement for audio Bluetooth. Not sure why they invested R&D resources on that, Bluetooth is quite efficient and allows you to easily use the headset with any phone or laptop.

I’m going to put it this way, I can buy the android app psplay: remote play for 6 bucks that stand at 1080p with hdr and I can put that on any cheaper android tablet and this app lets me use any controller. Saving 200 bucks is with not having a dual sense. I can also use that app on a nVidia shield with zero problems. It also lets you play out side the house and is a far better app than Sonys one…in short, i will not be getting this new product from Sony!

As I said in another thread - it doesn't need everyone to like it to be successful. If that 10% who will "be buying it as soon as it releases" (based on survey results at the time I post this) happens to apply to the entire PS5 user base, that's 4 million units.

It won't do that well - but I don't think Sony expects it to. I don't know their internal numbers, but I bet they think if it sells 1 million units it's a success. That means they'd need just 2.5% of the people with a PS5 to buy it. As much as people may hate on this, do you really believe 2.5% of PS5 owners is too high a hurdle?

I don't know how many DualSense Edge controllers really sold, but reporting on this site from earlier this month says it was "the best-selling accessory in the US for the month of June," which was a surprise to the reporter because most PushSquare users aren't interested. Well - adjust your expectations for what numbers are considered a success.

I'm definitely interested, and $200 is a lot less than the $300 I was expecting, or the $100 that would be a day-one purchase for me.

I found another app called psplay:remote play (Dev working on an iOS version) and it’s night and day! Best 6 bucks I spent!

I've used both GeForce Now cloud streaming, and their now defunct PC to Shield TV stream.

Even the former is decent for many genres. The latter was perfect though. You wouldn't know it wasn't playing locally e.g. like a Switch.

My Switch has only been used handheld outside the house a couple of times too.

I think it's a great product, but would be a total winner if they replicated GF Now, such that people could buy it instead of PS5. Basically like Stadia....

The problem is, compared to NVIDIA or Xbox streaming, the Sony service is appalling. They are 3 years behind everyone else IMO.

If they give me one for free I’d only use it once and never touch it again. If they make a proper handheld I’d use it more than my Switch and I’ve put a LOOOOT of hours into that

I just use remote play on iPad Pro with my dual sense edge. Does the job and bigger acreen

I’ll certainly be picking it up, useful in cases where I used to use the Vita, like when the main TV is being used or in bed etc.

Nope. I've lost nearly all interest in handheld gaming after the 3DS's run, simply because neither the Switch OLED or PlayStation Portal offer anything unique in hand held mode. They're just hybrid consoles....Which is why I'd rather just play them on a 65" QD-OLED TV with a surround sound system.

The Launch 3DS for ex had 3D(it was incredible), AR, Dual screens, gyro, touch based controls, swap note, it's own exclusive hand held Virtual console AND exclusive games. That gave me the incentive to play on it, because it was doing things that weren't possible on a TV with a Wii.

@Geep do you think I’ve never tried it? It’s so bad it’s unplayable and I have a very recent iPhone and very good internet. It’s pathetically bad. I’m 100% buying one of these as it would enable me to game when I otherwise can’t win-win (but without the crap remote play app lag)

I recently tried remote play sitting in a hotel room, on wifi, connected to my PS5 which was about 3 hours away and using ethernet. I was shocked to find that Persona 5 Royal worked pretty much seamlessly, as did Lumines and the Killzone campaign. Even weirder considering I was on hotel wifi. I tried it in my room back home, just a set of stairs away from the PS5, and it was so snappy and responsive that it felt like playing a Switch and not streaming. But of course, the touch controls on the app are garbage. Maybe it's just the ethernet setup but this tech works wonders for me and yes, I think I may be in the very small niche who actually will use this all the time

I would rather allocate that money to an iPad. Remote play with that and a DualSense.

I love the idea… not sure my WiFi is good enough for it. I would not mind playing it tethered to the Ps5 if possible….Will probably pass on it but might get it on impulse.

If this eliminates the need to reconnect my phone to my PlayStation EVERY SINGLE TIME I leave the app I'm all in. My wife wants me to spend more time outside anyway so this is perfect.

It's a little concerning how Sony seems to be hell-bent on turning Playstation into the Apple of gaming.

@Geep so in your mind it’s easier to get your dual sense hook it up to your iPad/whatever then prop up said device on what your lap? Rather than just picking up the portal and off you go. Waste of plastic in my opinion, we all already have devices that do this and more at no extra cost. If they made a portable that doesn't need the PS5 to work but can connect to it I would open my entire wallet! I would fully support Sony just straight up copying the Switch

@cloud36426 Fair enough - apparently it's possible to get a 4-year-old used iPad for under $200 now. That would definitely do more than this.

But the controller wouldn't be integrated, you may not have all the DualSense functionality (not sure if you can pair a DualSense with an iPad - maybe you can), and it wouldn't be as convenient. But it would be a bigger screen, so that may be a worthwhile tradeoff.

There's no one right answer here. I have a dislike for Apple, so an iPad isn't on my radar, though a tablet might be. I've used remote play from my phone connected to a 40" television (before they made it simple to use the PS4 as a remote play client). There are plenty of solutions. I doubt Sony expects this to appeal to a majority - or even a large minority - of Playstation owners. It's a niche product, but they have to promote it to get the people in that niche to hear about it.

@Juanalf like the ps vita perhaps? That sold the princely amount of 12m units. Handhelds bomb unless they are for Nintendo’s crowd 👌. This is a second screen for people who can’t use their tv when they want due to family etc. perfect for some of us

Can’t compare the two. This is more like Version 1 of PSVR.

If it ends up selling 17mil or so like the Wii U did, Jim Ryan would probably set up a press conference just so that he could declare himself the king of the world & a visionary.

This will be expected to do something like PSVR(1) numbers. 5million and everything else is gravy.

I think it'd be a really different situation if this portable was not a streaming device and something like a PS4 Portable with PS4 games running natively from it.

the data from that poll is brutal and quite concerning. small sample, i know, but we can get a sense of interest based on that. if we make the assumption that only 25% of the most "hardcore: ps users around the world want a portal... and there is a total of about 5m "hardcore" ps users that this product is aimed at... we can get a ballpark of the total sales. we are looking at roughly 1m+ portals being sold and up to 2m if sony is lucky. something tells me that is absolutely not a worthwhile investment for sony and it will just be another failed experiment to be forgotten.

@Mikey856 you heard it here first! looking forward to seeing this product discountined within 12-24 months on the shelf. to be honest, i think that would be for the best so that sony designs a proper (natively run) handheld that takes lessons from switch and steamdeck. i can totally see a portable ps4 being viable. imagine being able to play all of your previously purchased (digital) ps4 games on a portable device? i imagine a bunch of ps5 games would work too (the less demanding ones) if sony puts out a product that is even half the power of a steam deck.

The issue with this is that it's not needed and for the most part useless ... You can only stream games from you ps5 - so all those people that are ps plus premium members that can stream online games on the ps5 can't play them on this remote play device...so what's the point. Most people nowadays have a laptop, tablet or phone they can use to remote play games. What people want is to be able to take games on the go.
Why have a premium subscription for streaming games but then come out with a device that can't play them.

I play my Switch soooooo much more since I got one (post-PS5 release). I have lower back issues, so I love laying on the couch or in bed to play. My PS5 is starting to collect dust for this reason. Having the Portal to remote play games lag-free via the new Link system in my home sounds like just what I need. I definitely wish it had an OLED screen, but LCD obviously brought the price down, so not a terrible concession. I wish it was a little cheaper, like $150, but I’m probably going to buy it.

@Fight_Teza_Fight This is the Wii U GamePad but a decade later. Many, many PlayStation fans laughed at the idea of off TV play back when the Wii U was announced, launched and then died.

Sony are basically milking their die hard fans to an extent that it has become ridiculous. $200 earbuds. $200 Wii U GamePad. $550 VR headset.

I'm part of the problem. I adore my PSVR2. But at least that's new and impressive tech.

Everything else they're selling is playing the fans for fools.

Backwards compatibility isn't vible Microsoft has proven this by no longer supporting BC. Also BC game's slowly vanishing over the long term. Hell not even Microsoft is willing to renew license on their own first part game to keep Forza Horizon 3 on the digital store for sale. Companies likes Rockstar will not renew licenses for their old game's, when they can port/remaster and pull the original versions.

It would be a hell no for me, if that was a poll option. I would have absolutely no use for it. Having to use it in conjunction with your PS5 at home defeats the whole purpose of having it. If it was it's own handheld system like the Switch where you could take it anywhere (with the option to use it like this is designed), then it would be a lot different. This is a $200 paperweight.

I love the idea of it. I still think it is probably a little expensive but when you think that you are getting a DS5 and a high quality screen, it's probably worth it.
I think there are a lot of games I could play on this on the couch or bed. Could be fun to relax with.

People are complaining about the price but I thought it was going to cost $300-$400. The way the rumors were going made it look like it was going to be pretty expensive. $199 I think is a pretty decent price but I actually have a use case for this so I'm a little biased.

Not for me. Had it the tech to take your old psp and vita games with you, or even ps2 then yeah. Absolutely. But it doesn’t. It’s tied to Wi-Fi.
I considered it for a while. But no. ASUS ROG for me where I can at least take my game pass and owned games with me. And play them in bed which is the only reason to buy this thing.

@theMEGAniggle Would you waste a ton of time on something like instead of just making a new version. I'm happy enough that they made Demon Souls as a remake instead of a ugly BC game. You can up the resolution but it will never look like a modern game.

I guess if you are fortunate/unfortunate enough to be living in a household with lots of people and fighting for the TV, it has a purpose. I can't see anyone else being very interested in it though.

Aside from the price, the biggest sticking point for me is that they say it requires an internet connection.

If I want to play a single player game on the sofa while someone else is watching TV, it should connect directly to the console, either via a direct WiFi link or through the router. No internet should be required.

I voted, use every so often and no interest. I know conflicting isn't it. I like the feature but alongside my phone/Vita offering more things to do with the devices (as someone into single use devices like cameras, MP3 players and more yes the consistency isn't there across everything for what I support or don't support the idea of).

The PS Blog explained it better than some youtubers and honestly it makes even less sense. For parents (morning/night)/kids off the tv or other situations sure. But the Wii U I could do more than that. The Vita you can it's a Vita with less features.

I use an AUX cable and can have the PS5 button setting to silent. Why spent $200 on this? Remote Play app on a device that everything already has and for parents to play at night/kids off the tv? Also no night light feature either? I mean sure. Or wifi outside as long as wifi connection is good of public/however far. Or just take a Wii U with a power bank on car trip/picnic and no wifi required. Yeah Xbox/PS/Steam Link need wifi Wii U does not.

With Sony nostalgia marketing, yet the games have no nostaglic value. How can they. Sure Ratchet/GT/God of War but I mean GT7 lies and is just GT Sport again. It's also mostly GT5 level system (I don't remember the tune shop being level gates only license tests in GT5) or FM6's roulette but worse.

Ratchet tries to be Tools/Crack in Time but it does less with those ideas and has only Blizar that actually showcases the hardware the rest are scripted and don't at all do anything new, fast loading sure, dynamic levels nope (GT7 may the weather/time but I mean Test Drive Le Man was 24 minutes day night and well Metropolis Street Racer did it with the clock on Dreamcast so.... why we are seeing things come back it's still just later ideas being realised then anything new just like this handheld is the Vita again but less features but more powerful?) so why bother Crack in Time was on an HDD and better showcased things better then.

Let alone Portal duology or Prey 2006 of teleporting around levels. How can people get nostalgic if well they aren't Nintendo they don't have those other IPs series continued either? Isn't that necessary for nostalgia. XD You can't just push the brand in people's face oh wait they do and people eat it up. XD

Even Android support would have been better than just oh (IF) it's just a PS5 screen casting device for $200. If it's android handheld competing then sure. But if it's so weak it's just for processing CPU/RAM needed for the cast image with a wifi chip and dualsense controllers then..... sure..... The only thing cool about it is the touchpads being two separate digitally then the Vita's big one in 1 of 2 ways then the backtouchpad that wasn't always used the same depending on the game's remote play support on PS4.

If it was dual screen like Wii U or PSVR is (cast to TV (or turn off your TV you don't need it there unless Playroom VR where it was for asymmetrical games like Nintendo Land showed as well with the Gamepad), cast to headset in VR 3D view) or the one Playroom Vita DLC then sure but it's not.

Honestly I'd rather Sony make a AR headset instead then this Portal device. Or a Head Mounted Display. Or even better people all buy PSVR2's in cinema mode aka the flat image in the headset is the same experience isn't it? Technically ok it's not but I mean technically you can do that and achieve a similar goal. XD

Asymmetrical games like UNO or Cluedo were perfect to hide your screen then 'ok everyone else look away while I look at my cards on the TV please' sort of situations then well just playing the card/board game in person instead or well online where you don't have to worry either. But this single screen handheld can't do that.

No one makes games for it so it's just not really needed. It's because Sony won't make a new storefront/games for it so they just say here is the most bare bones approach to a handheld. Oh it's for parents/kids. Oh have a headset with better audio (which the earphones and headphones are worth it for the quality, even if the prices are weird but I guess for the earphones it makes sense since it's not been done before for the design?).

The Link button is a joke and proprietary nonsense. Sure the lightning connector on Apple devices made sense and it's benefits besides USB/Bluetooth. The better latency reduction sure but over time phones will outpace it and this thing will be behind like all handhelds do so it's hilarious. It's brand name is what it is. Also phones/tablets/PC/PS4 have PS+ access too hmm why buy this again? Bluetooth is on the earphones/headphones anyway too. XD

The Vita had PSNow support for a time just like the consoles. It had PS Mobile till 2015 or so. You had Playlink for smartphone connected party games (that's why you have that smartphone option in settings besides other things I gues) on PS4 before Everybody 1-2 Switch offered smartphone support to it.

I use an AUX cable to watch TV through a headset. So it's quiet nothing goes through unless my headset is plugged in. The PS5 got it's Xbox One style setting to make the POST sound quiet (not going to PS4 though). So I didn't pay $200 for another screen controller (also no dual screen either is annoying) or another headset besides the headset quality.

This product is brand name and money hungry and makes no sense the more I look at it.

The only thing that's fair depending on your stance is the price. Otherwise the wifi if you want local get a Wii U and a power bank to take it in the car, on holiday, to the local park. In a backpack even to keep them in close range (besides the 70 feet line of sight no obstacles of walls or anything). The wifi may be better than Vita's 2.4GHz and otherwise chips of the time but at the same time people were using it with phone hotspots. You can do the same with this as well or even a phone.

I wish Sony would figure out a way to play legacy games without relying on streaming (heck it probably costs more money to maintain the servers to do that than to have an emulator on the PS5 to handle it).

I guess it's just too much for a company to show a little appreciation for its back catalog and simply do something nice for its massive fanbase. Heaven forbid a company has a small amount of goodwill towards consumers.

They'd rather fork over money for a $70 Twisted Metal Remastered Collection that contains only the first 3 games upscaled to 4K with DualSense support and defend it for being a great value: because the first 3 Twisted Metal games are better than anything Microsoft ever put out in its entire existence (note: sarcasm).

NOTE: I was happy when Wild Arms was released as at least that purchase from my PS3 days transferred over and I could download the PS5 version for free. It's nice that those games are available, though - I just wish Sony would do more. Admittedly I haven't really been keeping much eye out for what classic games have been added with PS+ Premium.

it would be pretty nice if you could insert a PS1 disc into a PS5 and it downloaded the Classics version for you (and the disc is your license to play it) - just like how the Xbox handles it.

I use Remote Play M-F and sometimes on the weekends when I’m not home. Not having to keep a PS4 controller in the car and having a device dedicated to this is awesome! And I’m betting it’ll steam Netflix & such. Correct me if I’m wrong because I’ve not looked into this machine at all because I know I’m getting it.

Then minus the 20-30 profit margin for the retailer.

So let's say Sony has to get it designed, built, shipped, warehoused, marketing etc all for about £80 max leaving say 15% profit at £30.

Then we have the problem of rising oil prices again, China embargoes on Ge and Ga and just getting the chips made could be difficult due to lack of global capacity and the rush for AI chips which make 1000% profit margins.

It will probably sell low volumes but hey Sony are giving us choices of products at different price points.

The problem I think that when a loud section of the Internet says "we want this it'll sell tons" then the company does it and it doesn't sell as in fact there just wasn't the numbers.

Found that out the hard way, wife wanted to start a small business selling to fans of a very well known IP.

Got permission from the rights holder, did a ton of marketing and asked at several conventions about possible intentions to buy.

Spent a grand on raw materials, wife spent months making the product. Even got a promotional one into Sean Austin's hands and photos of him playing with the board game she made

Paid for a table at a convention and all the people who said they would 100% buy it just mumbled excuses or just walked by.

So when I see people on the Internet saying something sell tons I remember that and I wonder if Sony had the same experience that BC going back more than 10 years is just not worth it

I am sure Sony did a cost analysis and found that hosting a server with PS3 games on it for streaming is cheaper than pushing an emulator to PS5.

Still, I think it could do better with PS2 and PS1.

It's already releasing games for PS+ Premium (and then for sale), but it would have been nice to have a third alternative to do it like Microsoft handled it: If you have a physical copy of the game, you can use that as your license to play the digital version from the Store.

Sure, third-party titles are a little harder, but why not have all of Sony's first-party games available in one place?

It probably wasn't worth it to consumers because you had to rebuy games you may already have on your shelf.

Nintendo literally includes access to a huge selection of classic games across 3 different platforms as part of its online services on Switch for only $20/year.

When it comes to the classics, Sony is in last place, in my opinion.

@XboxTheBestBox i can already answer this one, ps3 bc is never going to happen, ever. there is a 0% chance of it ever happening to the point i 1000000% am pretty sure they aren't even talking about it.

The biggest problem with remote play and the reason for why I don't use it is the fact that the Playstation and whatever device do not communicate over the network directly, so you will always be limited by your ISP's upload speed. If you think Steam Link introduces a bunch of latency even over a 1Gbps connection, it's even worse on remote play, even if the two devices are in the same room.

Remote play has to upload to a Sony Server and then go back to your Remote Device so this introduces a ton of unnecessary latency.

I don't entirely fault Sony for that limitation since it's most likely to combat people exploiting remote play to cheat or do whatever else.

@XboxTheBestBox I won't ever be caught dead paying more for PS Plus to stream games. If they give me a legit emulator as part of that price, then they will get me.

@BoomBoomBrucey The parent/kids off the tv (at night for parents) is fair. Niche but fair. I can use remote play to my phone and cast it with a third party app back to my TV if I want too. XD Like Playlink this device has a place but I think it will be forgotten sadly. Regardless of even handheld fans response to the device over Switch/PC handhelds or Android handhelds.

Splitscreen co-op would have been nice for families beside just off tv play this offers. Let alone dual screen support. But they don't want to put that effort in. Even the Vita barely supported that and mostly remote play (besides Playroom DLC and I think Deux Ex offered it like the Wii U version).

Playlink got more that attention and PSVR gets well just the cast to both TV and headset then split screen other than the Playroom VR games for asymmetrical games like the Wii U had with Nintendo Land besides the very few co-op splitscreen or multiplayer split-screen modes as well like COD or ZombiU had exclusively to those versions of the games even though PS/Xbox had second screen apps that were available. At least Kinect had Just Dance support it besides well Kinect used for medical and non-gaming uses.

I forgot if it has Android support then just PS5 strictness as well and how powerful it is but I mean..... it's clear how it will be used though by some people though for emulation (web browser even to play games that way besides android play store emulators).

I don't think the link button/dongle need to exist. I don't think we have tech limits met unlike past eras. It's not like I never saw reason in the lightning cable for Apple devices and their benefits but it's still proprietary. Is bluetooth not able to balance many channels of audio/device support? I don't know. Let alone the headphones/earphones work on other devices with bluetooth it's just the handheld forces the link button. Aka for encryption to prevent hacking I think then a tech limit bluetooth doesn't have. Like the PS Camera/Kinect and the PSP/Vita I get it thy had limits/didn't want to have cable splits or something but still. It's just annoying and things have gotten to the point where they seem less ideal due to more standards and more cables/power output and other things making sense.

The dongle seems like an encryption/hacking prevention then it does actually necessary. Also it can't do more than 1 earphones/headphones either is odd to me. I get it has limits of audio for say call and gameplay for example/priority for the user but still. Seems odd to me. I don't fully understand it though either so can only speculate.

Can phones/PC use PS+ making this device (I think) less capable then those besides the latency reduction solution they have an PCs/Phones upgrading over time leaving this device behind. Vita and phones could use PSNow for a time before they cut Vita support. Even PS3/Vita transfers of saves and PS Store games got cut off in firmware but the store postponement is still on we can still buy games on both.

That's the part that confuses me is the dongle/link button besides that I use an AUX cable (so headset is the only way audio comes out of my TV/consoles), there is a headphone jack on the handheld so why buy the wireless unless you like wireless and the quality they provide over your own headphones/earphones (the quality is worth it for sure of course not denying that even as a cabled headphones preferred but for the price good quality then high end brands yeah it's worth it for sure).

Also the PS5 POST/button can be silent now with the latest firmware (regardless of Xbox One having it years earlier and I immediately used the setting and still do, also PS5 exclusive feature there XD). Other than buttons on the controller being loud to press still what am I missing here?

Other than oh a tablet/controller isn't as suitable as it's not attached the same as the Dualsense grips are which is fair to get the whole controller and the touchpad in two digital halves I like that the Vita remote play had 2 methods and it was based on the game and I didn't like that really.

Those that used the backtouchpad I preferred then the touchscreen when I needed to clean it or something else it got annoying with the whole touchscreen as a big touhchpad (unless you were still playing on the tv still with your Vita). Also no dual screen support is sad. Playlink party games with smartphones (Everybody 1-2 Switch with smartphone support years later), Vita playroom DLC (that's it, some like I think Deux Ex did like Wii U had) and PSVR all had some form of dual screen support but this is single screen. Maps and more could be put there or quick access PS5 menu features too.

I think making the dualsense grips detachable would be more suitable like the backbone was or the Switch Joycons separating are. I also wonder how much they will snap off too.

It is just Wii U/Vita with less features and while not a bad thing it is kind of disappointing. Or Indies that used features and go well there is nothing to implement here what a waste it's just a screen that casts the game. Which is why notable Indie devs on Vita laughed at it's announcement showcase.

Like the Vita and PSTV, it's a definite buy for me.
Time will tell how well it fits into the Playstation ecosystem overall, and how long before it gets a price cut (potentially).
I tend to enjoy the more ridiculed Playstation peripherals, obviously.

Another thing I want to address. I haven't been on here in forever because of work, girlfriend, and other duties/obligations. 200 isn't too steep, but it isn't low either. I'm unsure on this device as of now. If it was more than a mirroring device for the PS5 than I would probably get one at launch. Like say a handheld gaming device that can also be used to mirror off of a PS5 would be much more desirable to me, maybe even others I'm sure. I still might get it if it's pretty useful, but I'll have to wait until after launch a bit to do a bit of research on it and see how it fares.

@Mikey856 are you responding to me? the psp sold 80m units and was a major success for sony so i suggest YOU do your research. the vita was a financial failure, but you live and you learn. don't forget that nintendo has had several failures over the years but they kept on chugging forward... n64, gamecube and wii u are all financial failures (as far as market share is concerned), selling 30m, 20m and 13m (same as the vita) units, all the while getting outsold by the competition by as much as 8:1. did nintendo call it a day and give up? no, they released the switch which is on its way to being the second best selling console in history behind the ps2. there is no reason to think a vita 2 etc wouldn't be viable for sony since both, nintendo and valve have proven that a hybrid console can succeed in the current marketplace. by the way, sony is allowed to have a failure or two under its belt considering all the successes it has had over the years.

I think between the design and the dual sense feedback they had a great and promising design for a complete portable hand held if they had just went the extra mile and made the thing it's on standalone console with the option to play all ps5 games in digtal library on the go plus cartridges or just only digtal for it's own unique games. Then they would have gave their self a real run of a chance in the hand held market place. That would have the switch beat on every fronts. Play your existing ps5 library on the go why pushing the insintive for going all digtal plus it's own games tailored to it.. Wasted opportunity to get their foot deep in that market share.

@XboxTheBestBox BC on Xbox hasn't really seen huge numbers outside of certain cases like CoD. I bet most of the BC games on Xbox have barely been touched. Wanna know Sony won't get PS3 BC on PS5? Because its not worth the time and money when it will hardly be touched.

I've noticed some websites saying there's no Bluetooth on the portal but I watched the CNET video where he tested it and they say the headsets can connect to the portal through PlayStation link or Bluetooth. So which is it?

I am sorry but no, why does Sony refuse to listen to what people want? Here are issues.
1. Remote play does not always work great, in my case I have gigabit network at home, and it still works like crap.
2. For that price it needs to do a bit more than what it does.
3. No Bluetooth support? PlayStation Link proprietary connection? This reminds me of Vita memory cards.

I say this thing is DOA. Should have saved the money and many proper portable devices to run PS4 games, it is possible!!! With optional cloud streaming and remote play.

I really believe this is Sony's way of getting back to the handheld market. I imagine a Portal 2 or Vita 2 is down the road with full portable gameplay. I like the effore and applaud them for taking a step in the right direction.

This is nothing but a PS gamepad with built-in screen and also limited to use with only dedicated ear/headphones.

Sony has kinda put themselves into a corner - given the cost of the dual sense, it's hard to see how they could have had much opportunity for a cheaper option - but at this price point, it doesn't make sense (at least to me). If it had allowed people to stream games from PS5 server blades (ie Premium - even though we can't get it here in Australia) I think it would have made more sense and felt more valuable. If it at least had BT capability for existing (world standard headphones) then at least it would seem halfway viable. If it had the ability to swap out controller units (for thumbsticks) at least it would seem halfway sustainable... controller drift will kill this in one hit. If it had better performance than RemotePlay, then perhaps it would seem as enhanced/innovative. As it is, it's a very niche product that will die on the vine; further evidence that Sony has lost the plot.

Edit - and for those people thinking this is a return to portable gaming... that AIN'T what this is about... and Sony has zero interest in developing on multiple platforms.

@MrMagic there is NO Bluetooth. It only works through wifi (to connect to the console/intermediate network) and only through a wired 3.5mm jack or PS Link (which is not actually supported natively by PS5.. and requires a USB dongle).

@Flaming_Kaiser no doubt re-releases have better quality but that's the point of not having to fork out another £60 just to play what you already bought. RDR for example if I was too okay it on Xbox I'd just use my 360 purchase and it's upscaled to 4k. With PlayStation I have to buy it again as a new release.

Having played PS5 games on a big tablet with the original DualSense, it's hard for me to think on a scenario in which I would spend 200+€ on a smaller device. It looks really good, it will surely be quite convinient to play on it. But again, I can achive the very same thing with a tablet (smartphone) and the DualSense.

Just for clarification it can be used over any WiFi connection, Sony just recommend that Home WiFi is probably better. This is from the Sony site:

I use remote play a hell of a lot between my old PS4 to my PS5 at home when we're up at our Holliday home on North Wales. Being able to still do that whilst my wife watches something awful like Below Deck is an absolute godsend

I think many gamers aren't doing their proper research its a portable device but its really a mirroring device disguised as marketed as a portable device for reasons

1. PS5 has to be on so outside of 40-50 yards I dont think even if device has a feature to turn on the PS5 remotely its going to reach

2. battery life is very short reported 3-3.5 hrs of use

3. Device needs a WiFi device to stay connected ...near your home your not going to be gaming in a airport 5-7 miles from your house and expect the device to turn on and play games while you wait in the waiting room lobby

4. Its been reported it eats a ton of data ...like its been reported avg of 15 mbs per second so even after a couple days of doing this your going to eat through your data plan in a week and have super slow speeds for browsing or have your data plan cut off entirely

many gamers I bet are unaware of these flaws and honestly think its a PS5 connect from anywhere in the city type device which it is not

I'm quiet interested in this to be honest. My Playstation is in my bedroom but when I play say my Switch for example, I'll have periods where I'm happy to sit in my room and play, sometimes I want to go and sit in the living room and play sometimes I want to sit at my desk and play. This would give me more opportunities to play my PS5 without having to constantly drag it up and down the stairs. So I'm definitely going to considered one of these in the new year.

The blindingly obvious thing to say that this would be a much more compelling value proposition if it could handle cloud streaming in addition to remote play streaming. I am really not sure why it can do one and not the other, unless Sony are holding that back as a feature until PS5 cloud is confirmed. PS Plus on PC is not a portable solution and for some reason they won't release it on IOS. The potential for this device is clear, but again Sony seem to make inscrutable decisions about device capabilities and the overall customer experience.

I suspect these results are skewed because how many younger posters have their own bedroom to play games in? Or perhaps they live on their own? Try having a family, where you don't get time to hog the main TV all the time, and don't want to be anti-social by setting up a separate room. Remote play is a god send.

It's frustrating reading these posts from obvious younger people, much like social media. Always an outrage.

I am tired of this cash-grabbing peripheral mindset. Nobody asked for new headphones or earbuds. I have the Pulse 3D headset already, you want me to pay again for a new headset? PSVR2 is almost abandoned by Sony and that is one of the greatest products ever released for gaming! They should invest more in PSVR2 to make more AAA games for it so it becomes more mainstream. Jim Ryan did not greenlight PSVR2 and he seems indifferent to its success. Relying heavily on 3rd party studios making VR games is not a strategy Sony should be taking. If Sony’s leadership have any sense, Jim Ryan will be fired in 2024 or 2025. Playstation is the new Apple!

@XboxTheBestBox I think it's high time we accepted that the PS5 is NOT powerful enough to emulate the PS3.

Antiquated Push/Pop x86/x64 vs the Cell's distributed SPE architecture is a push too far. what they have managed to emulate so far is 5-10fps on a good day and that's not good enough.

PS1 and PS2? Not a problem, and the PS4 would've been more than capable but Fony can make more money (their only goal these days) by flogging remasters of remasters.

Only positive of trying to emulate the PS3 would be the melty PS5s which would probably look better.

I really dont see the point in this unless you dont have a controller or another screen. I use the remote play app on my tablet and it runs perfectly. If this was like the Vita I might have been interested

My thoughts exactly. If you wanted to use remote play, your phone, tablet, laptop or any screen you likely already have is there so all you need is your controller.

$200 is an expensive accessory for something that has literally 1 purpose.

Spending $200 on an OLED VITA would be more worthwhile than this Portal thingy

@deathaxe I think I'm getting one but it is a bold choice by Sony. They can't rely on making money back (if this sells at a loss) by having it shift games. This is an extra/add-on. It won't sell any titles to make up costs.

As I've said before, if you want something to use remote play, just buy a backbone one and use your phone, save £100 exactly the same experience and you can play on mobile if you have enough data

I don't need one with my gaming habits as they are right now, but once the little one gets a bit older and wants to monopolise the TV, I'm sure I'd rather be playing PS5 than watch the utter doggerel that passes for kids television these days. As a parent who plays games, I can see the market for this, I'm just not quite there yet as the kiddo is still too young for TV.

I used to use remote play frequently when I had the PS vita. But the screen cracked on that, so stopped using remote play. And I did use it on my phone, but not as much. I no longer have a PS4 and I don't have a PS5. So I won't be able to remote play anything.

I think if this thing were to let me play psp and vita games, I might have been interested.

@mariomaster96 50 megabytes per second is actually quite fast. It's the 50 megabits per second that is slow. But still decent. So if you have 3mb/s, it should be good for streaming.

I might be wrong here, but from coverage I have seen, Portal can access your PS5 from outside your home network as long as your PS5 is connected to the internet. So in practice you can be in a hotel, turn on you Portal, wake up your PS5 in your home and then stream your installed games to your hotel room. Obviously your hotel connection will have to be Godly but this is kinda neat. For the record I would have preferred Vita 2.0 as I was in line after school for the PSP on day one 2005 and again for the Vita in 2012 - but then again my SteamDeck covers all the bases especially now that PS exclusives are slowly being released on Steam. Having said that I do still boot up PSPGO for some WipeOut Fusion lol

If you don't have access to a tv all the time, you can get a small curved gaming monitor and long HDMI cable for less. Add on some headphones, or a soundbar for the same cost.
The lack of onboard storage is a deal-breaker for me, but ok it's cheap. Needing WiFi is pretty bad, but only streaming directly from the ps5, no other access to games is straight up ridiculous. I'm trying but the can't see any use for this except getting rid of $200.
And what happens if someone tries to get a bit of quality gaming on the actual PS (with a proper sized screen) while you're hunched over this silly little thing? Do you get booted or are they locked out? This is going to lead to some sibling violence lol.

@mariomaster96 even though I think it's a waste of money, you'd probably be ok as it's the WiFi link to the ps5 that's important, as I understand it. My internet is ok but nothing special, but my wifi communication is close to gigabit on the 5ghz band.

@MrMagic Headphone jack =/= wireless. I wont play with my Pulse 3d headset which i can use wireless with my PS5. The dongle itself in PS5 is a fuc---ng joke that PS5 don't have built-in BT. Now they force me to get new head(ear)phones that are in a standard noboby cares for or otherwise wired?

@AhmadSumadi unless your car has WiFi, or you want to use your phone as a hub, I wouldn't take that controller out of the car yet. Unless you're talking about the car in your home garage.

And like someone else said, It might be dependent on wifi connection. The PS3 and PS4 used to do direct WiFi connection to the PS vita where an internet connection wasn't required, so I'm guessing this device might be the same as well. Tho on the vita it wasn't that great even tho I was close to the PlayStation.

I won't be buying this. I just don't see the point. I can use my phone for that. Honestly I don't see any reason to play ps5 games on that small screen over my big screen. It really maybe only good for kids to play when there supposed to be in bed but I can't see very many adults wanting this. Also most people got tvs in there room and it's almost the price of a Nintendo switch. Now if I could play it camping, at work or on a plane I would buy it in a heartbeat. I just don't understand the point of it. We got wireless controllers. I hope nobody buys this cash grab and they should of made a ps vita 2 instead of this nonsense

@ShogunRok you can stream ps5 games from your phone on the same wifi and just buy the controller that your phone fits into. I guess if u don't have a tv in your room than maybe but I think it's a waste of money and they should of made a vita 2

@Disan it's also almost the same price as the basic switch. I can get the original switch for 279cad and this portal is 200 American dollars so that's probably 250 to 260cad

@mariomaster96 oh, no I thought when you said mb/s I thought you meant mbps. I guess you did mean mb/s. But 450mbps isn't slow. The highest I can get is 200mbps. But I think that's decent. And I don't think download speed matters when it comes to streaming, but I'm not sure. It might have to do with ping and stability.

what makes this announement even more funny is that the switch lite is actually CHEAPER than the ps portal. how can a device which runs games NATIVELY and includes much more advanced hardware under the hood, be cheaper than a streaming-only device? sony doesn't understand its audience nor the marketplace and should temper its sales expectations with this device. that is all i can say at the moment haha.

I think its a great idea but i cant leave the playstation alone as it is my eyes would go square. Buts say one is going away for a while and bored as shoot in a hotel room it would be great to fire up your playstation without having to lug the ps5 along.

@Disan I use my phone’s hotspot. For instance, I was at the airport waiting for my cousin one time. Flight got delayed so I connected to my hotspot and played some ESO and Fallen Order. I was in a hood spot so no hiccups.

So we have a split dualsense controller with a cheap 1080p old tech lcd screen, 0 storage, a low battery life, you can only stream games, no blue tooth, and it only streams games but not ps plus premium games.
All that for 200?

What exactly am I paying for?

A 8inch monitor costs 65
So all in all costs 130
And they are trying to sell me it at 200.

It's just outrageous pricing.

If this thing was 100 a controller with a screen to stream my games then maybe, but 200 its just not worth it, for playing it in my bed.

I thought the Backbone was expensive. Admittedly this does have the bonus of an included screen, but apart from that, what is the benefit? It's another, arguably limited-use device to charge when many might already have dedicated handhelds.

I own a Switch and a Steam Deck - I'm not desperate to play PS5 on the toilet.

I see this going the way of the PSTV - hefty reductions months after release.

I am fine if they want to make this. A BackBone is $99, you still need to use your own phone. And unfortunately most modern phones have the wrong aspect ratio these days.

But they should also release a Dedicated App for the SteamDeck and Ally

Steamdeck and Ally are not tied to any store like Switch, Android or Apple. So they can sell it directly and 100% profit.

@naruball The problem with your maths is that it compares two things that the Portal ISN'T. It can't really be used as a "controller"... and it really can't be used as a monitor. If it could host other apps (aka an actual Android tablet) - including a PS Premium Streaming app, then I think it would be much more attractive.

The other challenge is that the cost of those things is largely artificial - and based on profit margins. The hard thing about this is it doesn't really come down to cost. For me - I would never pay that money for that product; however clearly for many others the novelty or promise of remote playing off a portable screen is both enticing and (and depending on your finances) affordable.

@naruball I understood that the numbers came from before, but I took it that you were explaining that these numbers were fine if you assumed there was a software component. What I meant was that these numbers are fundamentally wrong (ok - I should have responded to the earlier post) because it's not a fair comparison at all. I was actually supporting (I think) your view, but I shouldn't have said "your maths". Edit - from what I read, you seemed to be saying those numbers were fine. So I assumed you were ok with them.

I specifically disagreed with the argument that it can't cost more than x amount, because it's just a controller and a screen. Obviously, it's not.

There's a very niche market for this thing. Mainly for couch gaming if you want to be in the same room as people who are using the main TV for something else. A lot of PS5 owners probably have an old PS4, which you can use to stream PS5 in another room easy enough. I you have an old 1080p / 60 hz TV on hand, there you go.

The market for this is so niche, I can’t see it lasting more then 2 years in production, we will see though. I mean I would say it’s totally pointless if you use your PS5 controller with an iPad for instance and remote play. I can understand why Sony hasn’t made another real portable system though, as it’s MUCH simpler having one platform, and Nintendo kinda dominate the mobile console space.
I have a Steam Deck and a Switch Lite I just got second hand, and the Switch is instantly a better system for me, but yes you lose a lot of power then.

If I could stream anywhere I had internet from a cloud server rather than my own PS5 it’d be an instant buy. As it is, it’s overpriced and criminally useless. Not to mention ugly as sin.
